Common Repair Issues
What follows are a couple of common repairs that you can make to your door without having to get assistance.
Bad Latching: A door that does not latch properly will usually have a warped or jagged edge that develops over time. There are many reasons for this to happen and you may need a new door as a result. However, if it is just a snag then there are things you can check to help it fit better.
- Check the hinge screws and make sure that they are tight.
- Be sure to use old books or magazines to prop up the door so you can tighten the screws properly.
- Inspect the doorknob and add lubricant if necessary. A corroded doorknob can cause snagging to occur.
- Check for any obstructions between the door and the frame. If you see an object that has become lodged, just remove it and you should be able to operate the door properly.
However, if the door still does not respond you’ll need to check and see if it is warped. If it is, then there is little you can do other than have the door replaced and find the cause of the warping. Once you have identified and eliminated the cause of the warping from inside the home, then you can rest assured that your replacement door will last a much longer time without warping.
Bad Rollers: One of the most common problems with doors is when the rollers start to go back. Most door rollers are made from plastic which is good because they do not corrode, but they can start to crack after a while and cause the door to jam.
- Take Down the Door
- If the door is made up of panels, just remove the one with the bad rollers
- Use the screwdriver to remove the bad rollers
- Install the new rollers and put up the door.
A new roller set is fairly inexpensive and all you need to remember is to get the same model as the one that you are replacing. There will even be instructions on how to do replace the rollers on the box or inside.
By taking these steps you can make simple repairs on your door without having to spend much in the way of money. All it takes is a screwdriver, lubricant, and some old magazines as well as new door rollers if needed which you can find at your local hardware store.
