10 Easy DIY Home Projects
Top 10 DIY Home Projects To Try This Weekend
Opening GlassNow’s new Loganholme office brought out our inner handyman.
Curiously trawling the web, we came across 10 DIY home projects to share with you, that could upgrade your space without breaking the bank.
The best part is you could knock out any one of these DIY projects in a weekend.
1. Paint an Accent Wall
This DIY home project will transform a room and make a huge impact. It costs very little and is quickly done.
Choose a focal point wall — one that would ideal as a feature wall, painted a bold, stylish colour. Perhaps the one behind your bed or sofa.
Prep the wall by cleaning, spackling imperfections, and applying tape to mask the edges. Apply 2 coats of premium interior paint in your chosen accent shade, using a mini paint roller and tray. Let dry completely between coats.
2. Build a Gallery Wall
For instant personality, transform a blank wall into a gallery wall display space.
Start by mapping out an arrangement of frames on the floor, using removable Blu-Tack putty.
Mix art prints, photos, mirrors and wall shelves. Combine different shapes, sizes and frames. Hang with nails and hooks, adjusting as needed. Space asymmetrically for interest.
3. Make a Rustic Coffee Table
For an on-trend, earthy coffee table, distress a few scrap wood pieces. Arrange them over a trunk or crate base and sand and stain the planks in varied wood tones.
Position planks slightly unevenly and secure with wood glue and nails. Add hairpin legs if needed for stability. Finish this DIY home project by coating with polyurethane sealer.
4. Craft a Headboard
This DIY home project involves dressing up your bed with a beautiful fabric headboard.
Use plywood cut 2.5–5cm wider than bed width and 15cm taller than mattress. Over the wood, staple or tack billowy fabric such as linen.
Lean against bed-frame and anchor in place with brackets. Attaching trim around the edges will create a more polished look.
5. Up-cycle with Chalk Paint
Revive tired furniture using chalk paint for an updated distressed look.
Lightly sand the surface before applying 2-3 thin coats of paint, using sandpaper or a damp rag to distress between layers.
This technique works well for many DIY home projects, including on dining chairs, cabinets, side tables, pendant lights, and more.
6. Install Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper
Peel-and-stick removable wallpaper makes it a breeze to wallpaper. Peel-and-stick saves hassles by transforming a wall without commitment.
Measure your wall to calculate rolls needed. Cut to fit. Peel off backing to adhere to your cleaned wall, making sure you smooth out air bubbles.
7. Make Photo Ledges
Display favourite photos on ledges hung with wire.
Paint or stain 2.5cm x 10cm boards. Mark and drill pilot holes every 40cm. Attach picture wire or sawtooth hangers to the back of boards.
Arrange boards and photos attractively.
8. Craft Map Wall Art
Use an old map for DIY art.
Pin the map on your wall using map tacks. Frame sections in painted wood framing, or glue segments to canvas or plywood. Finish with hanging hardware.
9. Handyman Herbs
Enjoy fresh flavours and scents just steps from the kitchen with a DIY herb garden. Choose herbs such as basil, thyme and oregano.
Position planter boxes in a sunny spot, indoors or outdoors. Plant herb starters in quality potting mix, and water well.
10. Update Cabinet Hardware
Refresh the whole look of your kitchen in an afternoon.
Swap out dated hardware for updated knobs and pulls in chrome, matte black, brass or bronze. Remove the old and install new, drilling holes as needed.
The possibilities are endless for easy, budget-friendly DIY home projects. Get inspired this weekend!
